Who has benefitted from the economic growth?

• The middle class: In 1985, 93% of Indians had to survive on less than a dollar a day, but India now boasts a burgeoning middle class.
• No trickle down: It is estimated that 77% of Indians live on less than $0.50 per day . This shows there has been relatively little ‘trickle-down’ of India’s new-found wealth to its poorest inhabitants.
• Population growth: India’s population is expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2030 (20% of the whole global population!).
• Corruption: Despite a high level of corruption in India, the Indian government is working to use their economic growth to develop sustainably. India has produced the highest number of Human Development Reports in the world .

Education

Illiteracy is cited as a key reason for India’s poverty. Over 50% of Indian children (most of which are girls) drop out of school before the age of 14 80% of these children are ‘dalits’ or ‘untouchables’ in the Indian caste system.
