Our Projects - Malawi - Children's Stories
Lonely Sumani, the House of Hope - “Hello! I'm Lonely Sumani, 17 years-old, from Lilongwe, Malawi. I was 12 years-old when my father passed away and 15 years-old when I lost my mother - they both died of AIDS.”
“I go to Kang'Oma Secondary School, where I'm in form 4. I have nine classes a day and my favourite subjects are Biology and English.”
“I self-board at school but during the holidays I live with my eldest sister Ivy. She is HIV positive. When I'm at home I help her with the chores. I'm good at cooking Nsima (our staple food), fetching water, cleaning plates, sweeping around the house and going to the maize mill. I also look after my sister's children when she is out.”
“When I'm not studying or working I play netball with my friends, read books and enjoy listening to the radio.”
“I have about ten friends with HIV and some of them have already started suffering from AIDS. My sister's daughter is three years-old and is the youngest person I know who has HIV.”
“When my parents passed away I was depressed because I knew that life would be difficult for me. However, House of Hope helped me to deal with losing my parents through counselling sessions and Ivy has supported me, she told me that I should call her my mother.”
Mr. Kenneth Aaron is 16 years of age and lives with his Mother. He attends Mitundu Secondary School in Lilongwe and enjoys studying Chichewa, social studies, History, French and Mathematics. His ambition is to become a medical doctor. He likes to read and listen to the news.
Miss Voilet Mangani - 21 years old and currently studies English, Mathematics, History and Biology. She has 4 other sisters and 2 brothers. Out of these, only 2 girls other than her go to school. Both her parents passed away in 1997 of AIDS. She is being looked after by her elder sister who is also HIV Positive. Her sister is married and whose husband is a casual labourer. Violet likes to pray and is extremely ambitious and would like to become a Nurse when she finishes school. She also enjoys playing Netball.
Miss Edda Mangani - 17 years old and sister of Voilet. She too is studying in Form 2. Edda enjoys cooking and Netball and wants to be an Air Hostess when she grows up-!
Mr. Samson Chawawa is 17 years old. He is one of 5 brothers and 3 sisters in his family and is the second eldest. Seven of his brothers and sisters attend school. His father is a brick layer and his mother is a housewife. His hobbies are singing and playing the key board which he has learnt on his own. He can also play the drums! Samson is currently applying for a place at Lilongwe Technical College to learn to be a Mechanic and also wants to be a Soldier in the future.
Mr. Standwel Bazale Kalepino is 18 years old and walks to Kaliyeka Secondary School everyday. He likes cleaning and praying. When he grows up he wants to an accountant. Standwel currently lives with his brother.
Mr. Amos Isaac - 17 years of age. He has two other brothers and 1 sister in the family, none of whom want to attend school. Amos is looked after by one of his older sister who is married and has 6 children of her own. Her husband is a manual labourer and so Amos is extremely happy to be supported by Wings of Hope. He wants to be an Engineer when he grows up. His hobby is Football.
"My name is Diana Phiri and I am 16 years old. I love to dance and play netball with my friends. I self board at Kang’oma Secondary School and travel by bus in the holidays. Since my father died, I now live with my mother in the holidays. My ambition is to become a nurse when I grow up."
Mr.Chifundo Lebiam -
19 years old. He lost his father in 1990 and remains living with his elderly mother. She grows maize and vegetables and in this way supports the children. Chifundo has 2 other brothers and 1 sister. He has great ambitions to become a doctor when he grows up. His hobby is Reading and enjoys playing Football and Basketball.
Miss Madalo Bandu – I am 16 years old and go to Chipasula Secondary School in Lilongwe. I love my English classes and also enjoy Mathematics, Chichewa Biology, and Agriculture. I now live with my Grandmother after my father died. When I grow up I would like to become a teacher.
Mr. Chikhala Alli – 19 years old. He goes to Mlodza Community Day Secondary School and enjoys walking from home. He likes to play the drums and his favorite subjects are Geography, physical science and bible knowledge. Chikhalaalli now lives with his Grandmother after both his parents died.
Mr. Andrew Saini - 17 years of age and is studying in Form 2 at present. He lives with his parents. He wants to be an Accountant when he grows up. He enjoys reading.
Kezia Ngalande is 17 years old and lives with her mother who is HIV Positive. The subjects she has learnt at Kaliyeka Secondary School include History, Mathematics, English, Chichewa and Bible Knowledge. Her ambition is to become a nurse after her studies.
"My name is Patience Mangani and I am 19 years old. I like to walk to school everyday and I study at Chipasula Secondary School. Since my parents died I have lived with my sister, but she is HIV Positive and so I help to look after her. When I grow up and leave school, I would like to become a nurse. In my spare time I love to read books."
Stanley Ziba is 13 years old and lives with her mother. She walks to Mlodza Day Secondary School from home everyday. She likes studying Agriculture, Life Skills and Chichewa. Her hobbies are watching football and spending time with friends, and her ambition is to become a medical doctor later in life.
Patricia Mpamira is 18 Years of age and lives with her elder sister. Their father abandoned them after the death of their mother. Patricia can walk to Chiwoko Community Day Secondary School from her sisters house and enjoys studying Mathematics, English, Chichewa and Biology. Her ambition is to become a nurse after she has left school.
Julia Yohane is a 16 years old girl. She lost her father in 2001. Her mother does casual work for a living. Julia is the third born in the family of three.
Her elder sisters are doing Adult literacy education at the House of Hope; they are all married and have children. Julia is in form 1at Chipasula Secondary School. She would like to be a nurse when she finishes her studies. Her hobby is playing netball.
Miss Kittie Phiri - 17 years of age and studying in Form 3. She is an orphan and so is being looked after by her extended family members who have their own children. She is very keen to have her own Salon when she grows up-!. She enjoys reading and singing
Mr. Kestern Ngondoma - 17 years of age and currently studying in Form 1. He is an orphan and has lost both parents. He is living at the present moment with his extended family. He wants to be a Teacher when he grows up.
Esimy Chinoko is 18 years old. She is a vulnerable student, her parent's divorced when she was very young. She doesn't know her father's whereabouts.
With the support from Wings of Hope she is now able to go to school and she doing form 2 at Mchitanjiru School. Esimy wants to be a teacher after her education.
Mr. Thoko Ntengula - 18 years old and an orphan. He is in Form 2 at school, and is the eldest of the 6 children. He wants to be a Television Announcer when he grows up-!
Francis Ngalande - 19 years. He is the first born son in the family of four. The rest are all girls. He has lost his father due to AIDS related diseases and is staying with his mother who is HIV positive and she is on ARV treatment. Francis is now happy because Wings of Hope is supporting him with school needs. He wants to be a Mechanic when he finishes school. He likes watching football.
Edina Yusufu is the fifth born in the family of 8. She is 16 years. She have both parents who depend on washing other peaples clothes for a living. The family really does strugle to get food. Her elder sisters married early in trying to get out of the poverty trap. Edina wants to go on with her education and become a nurse. She is so thankful to the Lord for what the Wings of Hope is doing to paying her school needs.
Miss Agnes Yusufu - 11 years old. She is in standard 5. She has 4 other brothers and sisters. Agnes has lost her father to AIDS. She enjoys cooking.
Nedson Samson is 17 years of age and enjoys reading books. He walks to Mchitanjiru Community day Secondary School everyday and likes studying life skills, history and agriculture. He now lives with his grandfather after both his parents died.
Saferana Phillip – 17 years old. Saferana walks to school everyday and enjoys studying Biology, Home Economics, Geography and Physical Science. He attends Mlodza Community Secondary School and would like to become a journalist. His hobbies are listening to music, watching soccer and reading books.
Miss Zeres David - 18 years of age. She studies in Form 4 (-Equivalent of year 11 in UK-). She is extremely good at Maths, but wants to be a Nurse when she grows up. Her father is a Carpenter whilst her mother is at home looking after her other brothers and sisters. Zeres loves to study and enjoys singing. She really had a very bright spark about her!

I would like to be a nurse when I grow up. I enjoy playing netball at school and like studying Chichewa, Social Studies, Bible Knowledge and English. "
Evelyn Shawa – 15 years old. Evelyn walks to Mchitanjiru Community Day Secondary School everyday from her mother’s house. She likes playing netball and studying English, Biology, Physical Science and Social Studies at school. Since her father died, Evelyn would like to become a nurse after her studies.
"My name is Catherine Mpamira and I am 20 years old. Since my mother died my father left me to live with my eldest sister and I no longer see him. I like to walk to Chilinde Community Day Secondary School from my sisters house. My favorite subjects are Home Economics, Geography and Agriculture. I enjoy watching football and would like to become a nurse when I leave school."
Esmy Chinoko is 22 years old and only stays with her mother in the holidays as she is not very well. Esmy goes to Kang’oma Secondary School and self-boards during the weekends. She enjoys playing netball and is studying to become a teacher. Her favorite subjects are Social and Development Studies, Chichewa, Mathematics, English, Physical science and Agriculture.
Wells Kanguwe is 17 years old and goes to Tsabango Community Day Secondary School. Wells enjoys studying English, History and Bible Knowledge. He now lives with his Grandparents since loosing both of his parents. He enjoys watching football and would like to become a motor vehicle mechanic.
