Our Projects - Malawi - Children's Stories

Lonely Sumani, the House of Hope - “Hello! I'm Lonely Sumani, 17 years-old, from Lilongwe, Malawi. I was 12 years-old when my father passed away and 15 years-old when I lost my mother - they both died of AIDS.”

“I go to Kang'Oma Secondary School, where I'm in form 4. I have nine classes a day and my favourite subjects are Biology and English.”

“I self-board at school but during the holidays I live with my eldest sister Ivy. She is HIV positive. When I'm at home I help her with the chores. I'm good at cooking Nsima (our staple food), fetching water, cleaning plates, sweeping around the house and going to the maize mill. I also look after my sister's children when she is out.”

“When I'm not studying or working I play netball with my friends, read or listen to the radio.”

“I have about ten friends with HIV and some of them have already started suffering from AIDS. My sister's daughter is three years-old and she is the youngest person I know who has HIV.”

“When my parents passed away I was depressed because I knew that life would be difficult for me. However, House of Hope helped me to deal with losing my parents through counselling sessions and Ivy has supported me, she told me that I should call her my mother.”

Miss Voilet Mangani - 18 years old and currently studies in Form 2 (-Equivalent of Year 9 in UK-). She has 4 other sisters and 2 brothers. Out of these, only 2 girls other than her go to school. Both her parents passed away in 1997 of AIDS. She is being looked after by her elder sister who is married and whose husband is a casual labourer. But Violet is ambitious and wants to become a Nurse when she finishes her schooling. She enjoys paying Netball.

Miss Edda Mangani - 17 years old and sister of Voilet. She too is studying in Form 2. Edda enjoys cooking and Netball and wants to be an Air Hostess when she grows up-!

Mr. Samson Chawawa - 17 years old, and one of 5 brothers and 3 sisters in the family. He is the second oldest. He is in Form 2. Seven of his brothers and sisters attend school. Fortunately his parents are alive. His father is a brick layer and his mother is a housewife. His hobbies are Singing and playing the key board which he has learnt on his own. He can also play the drums! Samson is currently applying for a place at Lilongwe Technical College to learn to be a Mechanic and also wants to be a Soldier in the future.

Mr. Amos Isaac - 17 years of age. He has two other brothers and 1 sister in the family, none of whom want to attend school. Amos is looked after by one of his older sister who is married and has 6 children of her own. Her husband is a manual labourer and so Amos is extremelly happy to be supported by Wings of Hope. He wants to be an Engineer when he grows up. His hobby is Football.

Miss Zeres David - 18 years of age. She studies in Form 4 (-Equivalent of year 11 in UK-). She is extremely good at Maths, but wants to be a Nurse when she grows up.Her father is a Carpenter whilst her mother is at home looking after her other brothers and sisters. Zeres loves to study and enjoys singing. She really had a very bright spark about her!

Mr.Chifundo Lebiam - 16 years of age, and studies in Standard 8 (-Equivalent of Year 8 in UK-). He has lost his father in 1990 and lives with his mother who is grows maize and vegetables and this way supports the children. Chifundo has 2 other brothers and 1 sister. He has great ambitions to become a doctor when he grow up. His hobby is Reading and Football.

Julia Yohane is a 16 years old girl. She lost her father in 2001. Her mother does casual work for a living. Julia is the third born in the family of three.

Her elder sisters are doing Adult literacy education at the House of Hope, they are all married and have children. Julia is in form 1at Chipasula Secondary School. She would like to be a nurse when she finish her studies. Her hobby is playing netball.

Miss Kittie Phiri - 17 years of age and studying in Form 3. She is an orphan and so is being looked after by her extended family members who have their own children. She is very keen to have her own Salon when she grows up-!. She enjoys reading and singing

Mr. Kestern Ngondoma - 17 years of age and currently studying in Form 1. He is an orphan and has lost both parents. He is living at the present moment with his extended family. He wants to be a Teacher when he grows up.

Esimy Chinoko is 18 years old. She is a vulnerable student, her parents divoced when she was very young. She doesnt know her father's whereabout.

With the support from Wings of Hope she is now able to go to school and she doing form 2 at Mchitanjiru school. Esimy wants to be a teacher after her education.

Mr. Thoko Ntengula - 18 years old and an orphan. He is in Form 2 at school, and is the eldest of the 6 children. He wants to be a Television Announcer when he grows up-!

Mr. Andrew Saini - 17 years of age. Studying in Form 2 at present. He lives with his parents. He wants to be an Accountant when he grows up. He enjoys reading.

Francis Ngalande - 19 years. He is the first born son in the family of four. The rest are all girls. He has lost his father due to AIDS related diseases and is staying with his mother who is HIV positive and she is on ARV treatment.Francis is now happy because Wings of Hope is supporting him with school needs. He wants to be a Mechanic when he finish school. He like watching football.

Edina Yusufu is the fifth born in the family of 8. She is 16 years. She have both parents who depend on washing other peaples clothes for a living. The family really does strugle to get food.  Her elder sisters married early in trying to get out of the poverty trap. Edina wants to go on with her education and become a nurse. She is so thankful to the Lord for what the Wings of Hope is doing to paying her school needs.

Miss Agnes Yusufu - 11 years old. She is in standard 5. She has 4 other brothers and sisters. Agnes has lost her father to AIDS. She enjoys cooking.
